There are some very simple tricks that can make you an expert at creating remarkable planter baskets, planter boxes and even planter beds!  So take a look at our simple tricks and always remember, if you like it, it’s perfect!

            1.  Get a visual or even an actual dimension on the size of area you will be filling.
Most planters run anywhere from 8 to 14 inches and can be square, rectangular, or round.  If you are doing a small planting bed the same general rules would apply.

  1. Visibility will guide plant placement.  Will your planter or planting area be visible from just the front or from all sides?
    1. If you are doing a planter that will be visible from one side only you can place larger plants toward the back of the planter or planting area.
    2. If you can see your planter from all sides you will want to place your larger plants more toward the middle.
  2. Now choose your ‘Thriller’ plant that will act as an eye-catching focal point.
    1. This plant,or plants, have height and pizzazz!
  3. Now look for some ‘Fillers’.  These are plants that fluff things up and fill in places.  They are usually shorter in height than the ‘Thriller’ and can have a complimentary or contrasting color to your ‘Thriller’ selection.  You can use different texture and variegation of color in leaves on your ‘Fillers’ as well.
  4. Now look for a “Spiller”. This is especially appropriate for filling containers.  Spillers fall over the edges of your container selection creating visual interest and drama for your container.  Spillers are often thought of as the ‘icing on the container!’
  5. Check out the attached diagram which was put together for a round type of container.  You can use the same concept for a square or rectangular container by simply manipulating the diagram.  Sometimes it really helps to actually take the plants you are considering and lay them out on the ground or in a shopping box, to see how they look together.
  6. This may be the most important rule of all, if you put it together and you love it, then it’s right!
